Whether this is your first solo trip or you’re a seasoned veteran, there’s some tips in here for every adventurer.
Are you getting ready to embark on a solo adventure?
Have some pre-trip nerves?
Don’t worry, it’s normal, even for those well-seasoned travelers flying solo.
In 2016, I (Ally) embarked on quite a few solo adventures all over the world and picked up a trick or two while I was at it.
A solo trip can be enlightening, empowering and so enjoyable, but at the end of the day, it can also be intimidating.
During a long layover in Denmark, I decided to hop a train into the city center with all my belongings on my back, which we all know screams “tourist”.
I was exploring the city when I had the thought “Not a single person in the whole world knows where I am right now.”
While this was an exhilarating thing, my dying phone battery reminded me very quickly just how naive I was at this moment.
Luckily, I got directions from a friendly barista, who spoke very little English, and he even walked me to the train station when I got a little too turned around.
After this little trek, I decided I needed to place more of a priority on safety when traveling alone, for any amount of time or distance.
So what things do I do now to make sure I’m as safe as possible during my solo travels?
I’ve compiled my list of go-to’s for just this occasion, and I’ve passed them on to many a traveler, whether solo or in a group, so take some notes, my friend!
1.) Share your itinerary! Even if you don’t have anything set completely in stone, let someone at home know the countries and regions you’re planning to visit and if something changes, let your people back home know ASAP.
2.) Have a person checking in on you. Whether it be a family member, friend, or coworker, have a designated person assigned to check in on you and know who to call if they don’t hear from you within a certain time frame.
3.) Make sure your phone works! In today’s era, if your phone isn’t working, that’s a you problem. And as a solo traveler, you need to ensure you are connected at all times. Buy a SIM card at the airport, download an E-sim, or invest in a satellite phone, keep a portable charger on you at all times, and make sure you can call for help or get directions if you need it!
4.) Make copies of your passport. God forbid your passport is lost or stolen, you’ll get much farther with the consulate if you can provide a copy of it. I typically keep a copy in a separate bag and leave a copy at home.
5.) Have emergency money! I always carry enough cash to buy a plane ticket home- because you never know. I always try to keep 2 credit cards on me as well, just in case one decides not to work.
6.) Be very cautious about what information you give out. Don’t share rides with someone you don’t know or trust, never give out your address, and avoid sharing that you are a solo traveler.
7.) Trust your gut and don’t be afraid to be bold. If someone is bothering you or feels unsafe don’t be afraid to let them know you are done with the conversation. Avoid confrontation and find another person to help- whether it be authorities, a nearby worker, or a local willing to help, don’t be scared to ask for help when needed.
8.) Research ahead of time! Part of solo traveling is embracing where you are, experiencing the culture, and immersing yourself in your surroundings- understanding cultural norms and respecting them will keep you aware and allow you to enjoy your surroundings.
9.) Stay aware and be smart! Avoid wandering down streets in the dark, going to obsolete places alone, or venturing out late into the night.
10.) Don’t let the fear of traveling alone stop you! Your first trip will always be a little overwhelming as you learn to travel alone, but the experience is always so rewarding! Knowing you are capable of accomplishing what you have set your mind to is nothing short of amazing.
Always remember to trust your instincts, research your destinations, stay connected with loved ones, and enjoy every second of your trip!
Let us know if you have some tips to pass on to your fellow solo travelers!
Cheers,
